February 2019 | Overdrive | 17 A U.S. Senate bill would allow citi- zens with concealed carry permits in their home state to legally carry a concealed gun in all states with concealed carry laws as long as the individual abides by that state's laws and the other state allows it. For truck drivers with concealed carry permits, the bill would make it easier to determine which states would or would not honor their permits. The Constitutional Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act of 2019, introduced by Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), is co-sponsored by 33 Republicans. Cornyn said the bill would treat state-issued concealed carry permits like driver's licenses, in that an individual can use a license to drive in other states but still must abide by that state's speed limits and highway laws. The bill would allow concealed carry permit holders to carry concealed firearms only in other states that allow it. Cornyn said the bill gives states the right to allow or deny another state's concealed carry permit. The bill was referred to the Senate Judiciary Committee, which will have to approve it before it goes before the full Senate. If it passes there, it will be sent to the House. — Matt Cole Proposal would expand concealed carry rights The Senate bill would not establish national stan- dards for concealed carry laws.
