April 2019 | Overdrive | 45 Western Star announced updates to its 4700 model, including an optional 12-liter Cummins engine. The X12 weighs 2,050 pounds and features front- and rear-engine power-takeo oerings to facilitate more upfitting options. The engine delivers up to 1,700 pound-feet of torque and 500 horsepower, has a fuel- ecient low-friction design and is compatible with a broad range of fully automatic, auto- mated manual and manual transmissions. Also, the Detroit DT12automated manual transmission now can be spec'd for Detroit- powered 4700s. With features such as creep mode, hill start aid and a precise pneumatic shift and clutch control, the DT12 is engineered to provide a smoother ride and reduce driver fatigue. Other improvements to the enhanced 4700 include updates to the electrical system, such as the addition of a third power distribution module, and improved interface con- nections on the cab's back floor, as well as four new options for trailer connections. Wabco OnGuard, now available on the 4700, uses a bumper-mounted radar unit to track vehicles and objects in the truck's path and automatically brakes if necessary. Bendix'sLane Departure Warning camera tracks lane position and provides audible warn- ings. Instrument panel gauges have been enlarged, and a new LCD dash display delivers more information in an intuitive design. Four customizable LED indicators are available to track truck functions. — Overdrive Staff Western Star updates 4700, adds options Western Star's 4700 now can be spec'd with a 40-inch low-roof or ultra-low-roof StarLight sleeper for extra storage or a larger mattress. Refuse retread Bridgestone Americas' Bandag BDM3 Drive Retread for refuse applications is designed with a proprietary tread compound for enhanced traction and to resist cuts and chips. A nondirectional tread pattern facilitates added grip in various on-/off-highway environments and helps reduce mounting complexity. Stone rejection technologyhelps increase tire casing life, and the tread compoundoffers a 10 percent improvement in wear life. bridgestoneamericas.com 20K self-steer auxiliary suspension Link's 20K self-steer auxiliary suspension features the com- pany's proprietary Swift Mount technology that facilitates faster installation, with interchangeable ride heightbrackets and a stepped-edge on the frame bracket that provides a visual indicator to help center the suspension. The rear air spring brackets are compatible with wide flange frame rails, accomplished by having the air fittings oriented to the out- side. The air fittings also can be repositioned to the inside.
